Recent graduate Trey Van Groningen ended his stellar career for Ripon Christian on Tuesday in the California Interscholastic Federation Northern Regional Championship at Berkeley Country Club in El Cerrito.

He finished in a three-way tie for 48th place out of the 92 competitors with a 7-over-par 79.

Will Chang of College Prep downed De La Salle’s Josh Kim for the individual title, winning a playoff after they each finished 4-under 68.

The top three teams and nine individuals not part of those teams qualify for the state tournament that takes place next Tuesday, June 3 at Poppy Hills Golf Course in Pebble Beach. De La Salle, Stevenson and Palo Alto were the top three team placers in that order.

Van Groningen started NorCal play on hole 1 but found himself 4-over through five holes. A birdie on the par-4 ninth hole had him sitting 5-over 41 at the turn. He was solid on the back nine and tallied his birdie on the 177-yard hole 17.

Van Groningen qualified for the NorCal tourney with a second-place finish in the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament at The Reserve at Spanos Park, turning in a 3-under 69. He is the first Ripon Christian golfer to reach NorCal and first from the Manteca area to do so since former East Union standout Ty Griggs did it as a sophomore in 2018.

Van Groningen will continue his golf career at Dordt University in Iowa.
