Folsom High is the final stop before the 105th California Interscholastic Federation State Track & Field Championships.

That is where the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Meet is taking place Friday and Saturday, and four local competitors are looking to make it back to state. The top three placers at Masters earn automatic bids, and anyone outside the top three can advance with at-large marks. Fourth-place finishers are alternates.

State berths will be on the line Friday in the 4x800 relay, boys pole vault, girls high jump, boys discus, boys triple jump, girls shot put and girls triple jump. Finals for the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs, girls pole vault, boys high jump, girls discus throw, girls long jump, boys shot put and boys long jump are on Saturday.

Ripon has legitimate contenders from its reigning Division V boys and girls teams.

Among them is returning state medalist Clara Schoolland, who placed sixth in the CIF high jump final last year. The junior is seeded sixth in the event.

Cal State Fullerton commit Starla Skiles qualified for state in both hurdle events last season and is ranked in the top two in the SJS for each race. She is seeded sixth in the 300 hurdles, based on times in divisional meets, but clocked the fastest time in the section for the season during the Trans Valley League Championships two weeks ago at 43.69 seconds. She is also ranked second in the 100 hurdles and seeded second with a time of 14.18.

Schoolland and Skiles are also eyeing a top-three finish in the 4x400. The Indians’ quartet, which includes junior Kaiya Kroutil and freshman Olivia Ellis, has the second fastest time in its preliminary heat and sixth overall with a season-best time of 3 minutes, 59.59 seconds. Kroutil is also running the individual 400.

On the boys side, Ripon’s Marcus Madoski has a shot in the high jump as a No. 2 seed. He owns one of the top marks in the state this season, leaping 6 feet, 9 inches at the Arcadia Invitational. Antelope’s Quentin Mitchell is the heavy favorite with an impressive seeded-mark of 7-00, which he got in the SJS Division II meet last week.

Manteca’s SJS Division III champion boys team has two seniors vying for returns to state with several others expected to contend.

Jayden Scarver qualified in the 400 and mile relay last year but won’t get the chance to compete in either race at Masters. He aggravated a bothersome hamstring injury during the Valley Oak League Championships 400, and the Buffaloes have scratched the 4x400 with graduation on Friday night.

Scarver is hopeful to make an appearance with the 4x100 this week. Julian Moncada, who was on the 4x400 at state, leads the sprint relay with also an eye on an individual state berth in the 100. Quinn Martinez is in the same 100 heat as Moncada. They were joined by William Brown and Joseph Habibi last week for a runner-up finish in the Division III meet.

Brown was a surprise performer at divisionals. The sophomore placed third in the 300 hurdles with a new program record time at 38.76 seconds, which is close to the at-large mark of 38.68. He’s the top seed in his heat for the Masters trials and No. 3 overall. The top four seeded times all came from the Division III final. Brown will also compete in the 110 hurdles.

Senior Joshua Mellion also had a monster effort at the Division III meet, winning the discus throw with a program-record measurement of 178 feet, 3 inches — almost full feet farther than the at-large qualifying mark. It’s also the 10th best mark recorded in the state this season. Mellion is in the shot put, as well, seeded ninth.

In distance events, Oscar Angel has the fourth-seeded time (4:18.46) in the 1,600 and fifth-seeded in the 3,200 (9:24.32).

Division III triple jump champion Tyler Watkins is seeded seventh (44-06) in the event. He also made Masters in the high jump.

East Union sprinter Jackson Fay owns the fourth-seeded time in the 100 with a 10.70. He’s also in the 200 and 4x100 with Cesar Salinas, JP Abrew and Darrion Brown.

Lathrop has two state hopefuls from its SJS Division IV championship boys team.

Gavin Miller is the seventh-seeded pole vaulter after winning the D-IV meet with a 14-06. His winning mark of 15-06 in the Western Athletic Conference Championship clears the at-large state-qualifying standard by 4 inches.

Riley Gier set a personal record of 1:57.98 while placing second in the 800 during the D-IV final. He is 4-plus seconds off of the at-large mark.
